Musical America
"In Celebration" is not only a manifestation of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio unrivaled talent but also a testament to their dedication to continually expanding their musical horizons. It comprises two significant piano trios, each unique yet harmonious, and features an unforgettable guest performance by Sting on the fourth track.
The Trio and Sting premiered Reveille (Trio No. 2) at the 92nd Street Y in New York to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Stanley Silverman, the creative force behind this piece, dedicated it to Herman Sandler, a staunch supporter of classical music who tragically lost his life on that fateful day.
In Celebration (Trio No. 1) emerged from the Trio's desire for a "jazzy" composition. Silverman found his muse in the figures who turned 70 in 1989, including American musicians Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Miller, English writer Anthony Burgess, and baseball legends Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. The Trio debuted this piece at the Krannert Center and later in New York at the 92nd Street Y.
Stanley Silverman comments on these piano trios, saying they are "deeply personal". The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio expresses their excitement, stating that they are "pleased that these recordings are now available to the public! Stanley Silverman’s uniquely engaging music has been at the heart of our Trio’s repertoire for several decades...".
